Harpreet Singh, an 18-year-old ace key striker, did not think of doing anything like this out of frustration, starting from taking a job as a short-term laborer, one of the top scorers in the third-half India Under-21 game.
Harpreet, a former trainee of Chandigarh H Hockey Academy (CHA) and a 12th standard student of Government Model Model Senior Secondary School, Sector-37-D, works as a laborer in two shifts for a daily income of Rs 800 and brings home bread and butter. Family.
He studies hockey from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. before taking part in the first job of the day as a paving and surfacing laborer. Later, he works as an unloading laborer at a local vegetable market or at local rice mills between 8 and 2 p.m.
After playing 11 national players from Chandigarh and several local-level championships, Harpreet has the unfortunate talent of leaving the eyes of the national selectors. He scored eight goals to become the top scorer at the Ghela India Games in Guwahati in January this year and was also named the best player of the 201 Nehru Cup.
Harpreet, a resident of Mangarh village of Amloh in Fatehgarh Sahib, was inducted into the Chandigarh H Hockey Academy in 2015.
"I don't know how I quit getting a job for an Indian junior prospect. More shocking was that Ghelo Bharat was not selected for the scheme. I was hoping to get some kind of scholarship to improve hockey skills and help my family. But it was a back-to-back shock, ”said Harpreet.
Her father works in a hotel, while her mother works with her on a paving and laboring job. "I work twice a day to earn Rs 800. In Chandigarh In, I have the support of coaches and friends, but here I have to work to make money. I don’t know if I’ll finish in twelfth grade or not. If a hockey academy starts, I will definitely practice there. I was in a similar situation in pre-Covid times, ”he said.
The last hope of the scholarship
The ace po striker said he is looking forward to joining hockey training by returning to get some kind of scholarship. "Playing for India has always been a dream, but consistently performing is what I focus on. With a labor job, I am not able to focus on my game. Stress and lack of diet are depressing my body. I just wish I could come back soon and get a little place in the scholarship scheme. I don't know if I will be able to pass my higher education or not, ”said Harpreet. "I do not know what went wrong with him. It is not designed to work as a laborer. He should be seen playing. It is natural but they need support otherwise it will end up like a lost soul, 'said CHA coach Gurminder Singh.
