Introduction to phrase and clause

We all use sentences in everyday life to tell others what we think, want or feel. A sentence is a group of words that have full meaning.

For example,

  • I'm very thirsty.
  • I am going to visit my aunt.
  • I light the lamp.
  • Maina is sitting under a tree.

Here’s a line “under the tree” that doesn’t make perfect sense. It has a meaning but these three words alone cannot give full meaning. There is no key to who is under the tree and what the subject is. Hence it is called a sentence. It has no subject (maina) or verb (seat).

A clause is a group of words or a part of a sentence that has subject and courage (verb + auxiliary words)
It's a group of words, but it doesn't have to be a completely meaningful sentence. However, sometimes a verse alone can give full meaning.
